"How on Earth Does One Actually Mega Evolve in GO?"
🎯 Theme: To the bewildered cries of a novice schoolgirl, a dreadfully impatient commentator and a Corgi bearing a peculiar recording device upon its head shall provide the answers—whilst making a fair few blunders along the way!
Dramatis Personae
Koto (The Schoolgirl): A young witch—ah, schoolgirl—who has only ever dabbled in _Pokémon GO_, owing entirely to her parents' influence. Having merely poked at her mother's screen as a small child, she grasps only the barest bones of the rules and systems. She is entirely bereft of deeper knowledge (relying solely on her mother's wisdom).
Calsto-OO: The Impatient Scholar.
DSK-o1: The Corgi with a penchant for faulty records.

"Mother always said, 'To ask is a moment's shame, not to ask is a lifelong curse!' So, swallowing my pride, I shall ask straight away! I read on the magical web that one absolutely cannot Mega Evolve in the newest Switch titles, _Scarlet and Violet_. Is this dreadful rumor true?! If so, can I still do it in the _Pokémon GO_ of my youth?

DSK-o1 (The Corgi):
_(With a sharp click of the recorder atop his head, growling in a terribly deep voice)_
"Oi, Calsto-OO, for an impatient fellow, your explanations are appallingly slow! Fret not, koto. Even in the newest SV, if you simply Mega Evolve a Pikachu, you'll sweep the floor with them all! Right then, recording _'Pikachu's Peerless Slaughter'_... complete! _(Beep!)_"

"Hold your Hippogriffs, DSK-o1! You are doubly mistaken! Firstly, Mega Evolution is not implemented in the newest SV in the slightest, and secondly, Pikachu cannot Mega Evolve at all! _Obliviate_ that data from your recorder this instant!!"
"Bloody hell!! It's a shock that it's missing from the newest games, but Pikachu can't do it either?! Does that mean not just any creature can Mega Evolve?"
Exactly so! Mega Evolution is a glorious privilege granted only to specific Pokémon that have already reached their final evolutionary stage—such as Gyarados, Charizard, and Mewtwo (a mere 46 species and 48 patterns in total). The greatest charm of the current _Pokémon GO_ is that one can still effortlessly enjoy the awe-inspiring spectacle of Mega Evolution, a magic tragically ousted from the mainline Switch games!
📝 Summary Analysis
① Unimplemented in the Newest Switch Titles (SV)
By the ruthless rules of generational shifts in the mainline games, Mega Evolution has been abolished. The realm has now transitioned to the phenomenon of _Terastal_.
② Still Brilliantly Active in Pokémon GO
The ability to easily summon the magnificent power of Mega Evolution on your mobile device, despite its banishment from the main series, remains _Pokémon GO_'s most formidable strength.
③ Restricted to a Chosen "46 Species"
Pikachu and its ilk cannot Mega Evolve. It is the exclusive right of certain Pokémon, like Gyarados and Charizard, who have already achieved their ultimate forms.
_(Note: Pertaining to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet)_

Q2. There are no "Mega Stones" in Pokémon GO?! How ever does one cast the evolution?
Q2. There are no "Mega Stones" in Pokémon GO?! How ever does one cast the evolution?
I see, a privilege for the chosen few. But wait, in the main series, they say you must have the Pokémon hold a magical stone, like a 'Gyaradosite' [Mega Stone], don't they? Yet when I peer into my _Pokémon GO_ storage, there isn't a single button to make them hold an item!?
_(Puffing out his chest and clicking the recorder)_
"Hmph, that is elementary. Because there are no held items in _Pokémon GO_, one must instead purchase a 'Mega Stone' from the shop with hard-earned Galleons—I mean, PokéCoins—every single time. I am unequivocally correct. Registering this to the archives! _(Beep!)_

No, no! Quite wrong, DSK-o1! It is nowhere near such a villainously expensive game! Stop that infernal recorder at once! In _Pokémon GO_, instead of held items, you collect and expend a rather special magical essence called 'Mega Energy', primarily gathered through the perilous trials of Raid Battles!
Mega Energy?! Does that mean I must exhaust myself fighting in Raids every single time I wish to evolve them? That sounds rather dreadful for a penniless schoolgirl...
Ah, rest your worries on that front! A vast quantity of energy is only required for the very first time [Unlocking the Seal]. Miraculously, from the second time onwards, you can Mega Evolve them for absolutely zero Mega Energy [Entirely Free]!
What, it becomes free from the second time?! Honestly?! What an exceptionally noble enchantment!
_(Clicking the recorder with a deeply menacing tone)_
"Hmph, then if one wishes to forge a second or third Mega Gyarados, one is ultimately cast right back onto that infernal, coin-draining path of endlessly grinding Raids for Mega Energy. Right then, recording as _'The Road of Despair'_... _(Beep!)_
"Hmph, then if one wishes to forge a second or third Mega Gyarados, one is ultimately cast right back onto that infernal, coin-draining path of endlessly grinding Raids for Mega Energy. Right then, recording as _'The Road of Despair'_... _(Beep!)_
You surrender far too quickly, DSK-o1! There is a saving grace for that as well! If you Mega Evolve that species of Pokémon [in this case, Gyarados] just once and register it in your Pokédex, you can simply make anyone from its evolutionary family [even a Magikarp will do!] your 'Buddy'. By merely walking alongside them, they will miraculously forage for Mega Energy alongside their usual Candies!
Merlin's beard, the energy simply multiplies for free just by taking a stroll?! So, if I just put the effort into making the very first one, I can become completely self-sufficient in energy just by walking? That is absolute magic!
📝 Summary Analysis
① Wielding "Mega Energy" Instead of Tools
As the concept of "held items" does not exist in the realm of _Pokémon GO_, one must instead consume a specific energy for each Pokémon, primarily gathered through the daring feats of Raid Battles, in lieu of a dedicated stone.
② "Entirely Free (Zero Energy Cost)" From the Second Cast Onwards
Once a creature has undergone Mega Evolution, they require but a few days of "Resting Time (Cooldown)" before they can evolve again countless times without expending a single drop of energy.
③ Break the First Seal, and Play Endlessly Without Cost
As the system merely demands energy to hasten the clock when you wish to evolve in rapid succession, successfully breaking that initial lock guarantees you can command this power endlessly without spending another knut.
Q3. Does the Mega Evolution in GO revert immediately "after the battle ends"?
Q3. Does the Mega Evolution in GO revert immediately "after the battle ends"?
In the mainline games, it was rather like a temporary Transfiguration, wasn't it? They only transformed during the duel and reverted to their original state the moment the wands were lowered. In _Pokémon GO_, does it instantly turn back into an ordinary Gyarados the second a single Raid Battle concludes?
_(Striking a terribly smug pose, readying the recorder)_
"This is where I step in. _Pokémon GO_ bears no such fleeting time limits. Instead, 'once Mega Evolved, the beast remains in that fearsome form until it faints.' Therefore, if you station it at a Gym, you shall have a Mega Gyarados defending your territory for twenty-four hours straight. Excellent. _New fact recorded to the archives._ _(Beep!)_

DSK-o1! You are horribly mistaken again! If that were true, the Gyms would be absolutely overrun with Mega Evolutions! In reality, once you cast the evolution, they maintain their magnificent form for exactly 'eight hours' in Muggle—ah, real—time!
Furthermore, whether your beast faints in the heat of battle, or your entire squad is utterly routed and defeated in a Raid, it matters not! So long as that eight-hour hourglass has not run dry, you need only restore them with a few Potions, and they shall charge right back into the fray, beautifully Mega Evolved as ever!

So long as that eight-hour hourglass has not run dry, you need only restore them with a few Potions, and they shall charge right back into the fray, beautifully Mega Evolved as ever!
Eight hours?! Bloody hell, that's ages! That's longer than my entire day of Potions and Charms classes combined! Does that mean for those eight hours, I can battle in Raids, wallop Team GO Rocket, and fight endlessly without losing the Mega Evolution?
Blimey! If we can simply heal them with Potions and have them rise to duel again and again like an unyielding Inferius, then for a novice schoolgirl like me facing a dreadfully formidable Raid Boss, it is an absolute godsend! What an immense relief!
Blimey! If we can simply heal them with Potions and have them rise to duel again and again like an unyielding Inferius, then for a novice schoolgirl like me facing a dreadfully formidable Raid Boss, it is an absolute godsend! What an immense relief!
Precisely, precisely! You can even have them stroll alongside you on the map as your Buddy! However, contrary to what DSK-o1 claimed, the rules strictly forbid placing them on 'Gym Defence' or using them in 'certain player-versus-player duels [GBL]'. You must be dreadfully careful about that!
_(Hmph, if it lasts a full eight hours, I suppose I can forgive it. Fiddling with his recorder)_
"Very well. Then I shall simply Mega Evolve my Gyarados, Charizard, and Mewtwo all at once, and storm into a Raid with my 'Invincible Armada of Supreme Mega Evolutions (All Six Slots)!' Let the slaughter commence. _Recording complete._ _(Beep!)_
Stop right there! You absolutely cannot do that either! The governing laws dictate you may only maintain 'a single Mega Evolution' per account at any given time! If you attempt to Mega Evolve a second creature, the first one will be instantly and forcibly Transfigured back into its original form! Do mind the rules!
Ah, I see. So you can't have a whole squad of them running about at once. Your absolute strongest trump card is restricted to just one. There's a certain dramatic romance to that, I quite like it!
📝 Summary Analysis
① The Enchantment Lasts a Full "Eight Hours"
Unlike the mainline series where they revert immediately postduel, within this time frame, they can battle repeatedly in Raids and against Team GO Rocket without losing their form.
② A Strict Restriction: Only "One Creature" Maintained at a Time
Should you cast Mega Evolution upon a second Pokémon, the first will automatically and forcibly revert to its original, unevolved state.
③ Banned from Gym Defence and Certain PvP Duels
While they may accompany you on the map for eight hours, you cannot station them to defend a Gym, nor can they participate in specific player-versus-player battles.
① Should a Beast Collapse (Faint) in the Heat of a Duel**
The Verdict: Provided the eight-hour hourglass has not fully run out, you may restore your fallen companion using magical remedies—namely **Revives and Potions**—and they shall perfectly retain their magnificent Mega Evolved state for the next bout, ready to strike again and again.
② When the Entire Squad is Routed and Defeated, Yet You Dare to Re-engage
The Verdict: Without the slightest shadow of a doubt, your beast will remain beautifully Mega Evolved as you launch a fierce counter-attack against the very same Raid Boss at the very same Gym.
The Elucidation: Under either of the following tribulations, the grand enchantment remains entirely absolute:
1. When all six of your chosen creatures perish in battle, forcing you back to the antechamber, but you swiftly tend to their wounds with restoratives and charge right back into the fray within the remaining time limit.
2. When the sands of time run out and you are dealt an official "Defeat," yet you immediately re-enter the chambers to face the exact same Raid Boss at the same Gym (without being forced to forfeit an additional Raid Pass).
Postscript: So long as eight hours have not elapsed since the initial seal was broken, the creature shall brilliantly maintain both its awe-inspiring Mega Evolved form and its splendid aura of support (Mega Boost) to elevate its allies' firepower, allowing it to march back onto the same battlefield as many times as your heart desires.
Q4. What is this "Mega Level" that unlocks greater boons the more you cast the evolution?
Q4. What is this "Mega Level" that unlocks greater boons the more you cast the evolution?
Even with the restrictions, having them around for eight hours is incredibly brilliant for our daily outings! I overheard a whisper in the corridors earlier—is it true that casting Mega Evolution repeatedly yields some sort of splendid reward?
Ah, naturally. The more you do it each day, the more the Mega Evolution's dark power accumulates, until ultimately, Mega Gyarados's offensive strikes become one million times stronger. Noted for the recorder: _'The Genesis of the One-Million-Power Mega Gyarados'_... _(Clatter, clatter)_
This isn't some absurd, power-creeping fantasy! Stop that recorder this instant!!! Their attacking power doesn't multiply by a million, but casting Mega Evolution repeatedly on the exact same Pokémon raises its 'Mega Level'! This grants magnificent bonuses, such as increasing the number of Candies you receive, and shortening the Resting Time required before the next free evolution!
More Candies?! Blimey, there are times I can't even perform a basic evolution because my pockets are empty! That is unbelievably helpful!
Indeed! Furthermore, while they are Mega Evolved, they project a splendid support aura in Raid Battles, boosting the firepower of all allied Pokémon fighting alongside you by 10% [Mega Boost]! If your allies happen to use spells—er, moves—of the exact same elemental typing as your Mega Evolution, that power is boosted by a staggering 30% [1.3x multiplier]! Your fellow Trainers in the Raid will be immensely grateful!
_(Tch, so it's not a million times... Clicking and whirring as he amends the data)_
"koto, these are the true boons. Ensure you record this firmly within your own mental archives.

Merlin's beard, an increased chance for Candy XL?! Reaching the Max Level is absolutely bonkers! It's settled, then. I shall Mega Evolve my Gyarados every single day and shower it with affection until it reaches 'Max'!
Precisely! Because you receive extra Candies for catching Pokémon of the same typing whilst your Mega Evolution is active, if you cast it during grand events like Community Days, you'll be practically swimming in a hoard of Candies!
_(Puffing his chest out and turning the recorder atop his head to maximum volume with a sharp click)_
"Hmph. It has been a tumultuous journey, but thanks to my flawless recordings—worthy of a supreme Head Boy or a Top Developer—the profound mysteries of Mega Evolution in _Pokémon GO_ have been dragged out into the broad daylight.
Right then. Registering to the archives: _'Daisuke saves the wizarding world. The case is perfectly closed!'_ Recording complete. _(Beep. He attempts to fade the scene out with a terribly smug look on his furry face)_
